The Engineering Process

The engineering process is a series of steps that individuals (engineers, developers, scientists) use to create a product or solution. These products and solutions are used by consumers and users every day.

Students begin by defining the problem and researching it. They then identify requirements that must be met. Then they brainstorm and look at how others have solved the same problem.

They then choose the best solution from their list and build a working prototype. This step demonstrates to students that they are able to turn their idea into a solution.

Students test their prototypes to see if they perform as expected. They why not try these out can also use prototypes to improve their designs.

It is likely that they will go through several prototypes before achieving a design which works and is completed. This iterative procedure teaches the designers to always improve their designs. They can’t be satisfied until they’ve done everything possible to create the best design.

Whether your students decide to become engineers or not, the process of engineering is something they can use throughout their lives to solve any problems. They can apply the skills they learn to any project, from building skyscrapers to making sneakers.
