What Does a Boot Scan Do?

If a cyber threat manages to make its way into your computer, it can hide in a variety ways. Many antivirus programs are able to detect malware with regular scans or real-time protection. However, a boot time scan is more thorough and will detect hidden threats.

A boot scan examines the computer system at a very initial stage, before it begins the Windows operating system. This allows the software to detect hidden malware without disrupting normal operation. Avast’s boot scan feature has various options for dealing any threats that are detected during the scan, such as making the files repairable immediately and moving them to the Disease Chest or quarantine, and then deleting them.

It can take a while to run a boot test. It’s recommended to turn off any non-essential startup applications and disconnect USB or external hard drives. This will minimize the possibility of conflict and let the scan concentrate solely on the internal storage. It is also recommended to schedule some time during the day when you won’t be using your computer for any other purpose, so that the boot scan can run without interruption.

To enable a boot-time scan go to Settings (the gear icon) within the Avast interface. Select Scan Settings > Protection and check the Boot Time Scan option. Set the options to your preferences, then click OK. The Avast Boot-Time Scan is a highly effective tool to help you safeguard your PC from malware and create a more pleasant computing environment.
